Ypres Visit
Over the break Mrs Smith led an amazing visit to Ypres in Belgium to significant sites from World War One. The visit included the Flanders Field Museum, the Commonwealth war graves and the site of the Battle of the Somme itself. The trip was a powerful experience for staff and students alike, immersing them in a significant period of our history.
Samuel in year 10 wrote this brief reflection on his experience to share with you: "Rows of sacrifice lay before me as the Belgian sun lit the stones and I stand in silence reflecting the stories of hurt for my peace. The landscape once torn by war is now quiet but as I remember the fallen, I reflect on all those who fought in my midst. The MECE history trip to Ypres and the Somme was a brilliant tour of the past and life in the First World War. From war graves and memorials to bomb craters and trenches, the trip encompassed the scale of atrocity of the war but also the glory of those who were there." All the students were an absolute credit to the school showing respect at the cemetery sites and an engagement with the stories of the men who fought and died there. A huge thank you to Mrs Smith, Mr Harte, Mrs Kirby, Mr Mount and Mr Caldwell for giving up the first weekend of the holiday to accompany the trip
